aloha,
We are anchored in Kepuhi Bay. This is in the north west corner of Molokai.
We left Maui and sailed clockwise around Lanai. Lanai is privately owned by Larry Ellison. Mr. oracle! Not much people here because the 2 resorts are closed for renovations. First we anchored in Manele bay and went to kaumalapau harbor a couple days later. Lanai city is a strange place. Lots of huge pine trees there. These trees were imported from New Zealand many decades ago when the island was owned by the dole company for growing pineapples. When we left Kaumalapau Harbor on the south west corner of lanai we got caught by some bad gusts with way over 40 kn. they fall down from the high cliffs of lanai and were very aggressive. We couldn’t reef the genua fast enough and the banging genua sheet broke our lifelines. One stanchion broke and another was bend over 30 degrees. We dropped anchor right next to the Harbir we left a couple minutes ago and I started repairing the stanchion. For gods sake we had some tubing left from the refit and 2 hours later the lifelines were fixed. One stanchion is still missing because I couldn’t get the broken peace out if the base but I replaced the bended one and put the lifelines under tension again. Works great! We then headed to the south side of Molokai. And had over 35 kn wind in the Pailolo channel. This time we only had a third of the genua out and were flying towards our target. We healed over a lot when the big, short and steep waves run underneath us and emptied our bookshelf. But that’s all and it was a good reminder that we always wanted to secure them.
Tomorrow morning we will left for Honolulu on Oahu. It’s a 40 nm trip to Waikiki beach and we have to cross the Kaiwi Channel. This is one of the rougher channels here in Hawaii. It’s 30 nm wide on completely open to the pacific. The tradewinds are funneled so they gain up in force to over 50%.
The forecast says wind around 20-25kn. From northeast.
Good conditions for ZERO and crew.
Next post will be from the world famoust beach!!
