even this leg was only a little more than 100 nm, we needed 36 hours to arrive in Kona.
When we left Kihei in the morning we had only a very light breeze and where doing just around 2 knots speed. Of course we had all sails up but if there is only 5kn wind ZERO takes her time.
When we rounded the south-west cape of Kaho'olawe it was already late afternoon and it was getting dark way before we loose Kahoolawe out of sight. With nightfall the little breeze died. We really wanted to sail the whole distance but the waves were shaking us around and the current tried to set us south. Two things we really didn´t want!
The weatherforecast, i checked just before departure, said variable winds around 10-15 kn, later forming a north wind around 10-20 kn in the Alenuihaha channel. But there was a high surf warining. The windward coast (North) of Maui was supposed to see some impressive 15feet swell arriving during the late afternoon. We felt these waves in the channel during the night and decided to skip our resolution ONLY to sail and started the engine.
After sunrise the little breeze came back and pusched us with 3-5 kn of wind towards Big Island. We were very slow but finally arrived in Kona at sunset, found a sandy spot to anchor and dropped our hook. Even we took way linger than expected it was a very calm and relaxing sail. Rebecca was very happy that this time we didn´t heel over, make water and have to hold ourself all time not to fall.
This morning some unusual sound woke us up. Is that rain? Wow. We hadn´t had any rain in Kihei for the last month.. It felt very cosy under the blanket in the dry bed listening to the rain falling on our deck.
So whats next?
we wanna meet our friend Ben and explore the biggest of the Hawaiian Islands with him. I really wanna go to Waipi'o Valley.
And we hope to do some projects on ZERO to be ready when our friends from Germany are coming to sail wit us..
Stay tuned!
Sounds like a lovely sail. Have fun on the big island.
